January is dull and gray, the New Year’s motivation has already fizzled out, and the cold months drag on like chewing gum? It doesn’t have to be that way! I always enjoy starting my year in the white expanses of our diverse ski landscapes. The large ski resorts in Austria have a lot to offer, and our local ones are just as impressive.
Germany’s ski resorts
Skiing in Germany isn’t just about the Alps. How about a run down Saxony’s highest mountain? Near the Czech border, you can choose between Fichtelberg and Klínovec. Western Germany also offers great skiing opportunities. Did you know you can enjoy fantastic skiing in Willingen, right in the heart of Germany, without having to travel far?
For all winter vacationers who feel at home in southern Germany, I can highly recommend the Allgäu High Alps. With their enormous range of winter sports offerings, they have a well-deserved reputation.
Eastern Germany | Ore mountains – Oberwiesenthal
The highest town center in Germany offers a true winter sports paradise with the InterSkiregion Fichtelberg-Klinovec. It features a total of 30 lifts, 47 kilometers of slopes, 146 kilometers of cross-country trails, and night skiing. Both beginners and experienced skiers will find plenty to enjoy here. As a little bonus, you can take Germany’s oldest cable car from Oberwiesenthal to Fichtelberg.
Just 50 meters from the lifts and slopes, the Best Western Ahorn Hotel Oberwiesenthal offers everything a winter sports enthusiast could desire. With a magnificent view of Fichtelberg, its prime location, as well as outdoor saunas and aromatic baths, this adults-only hotel has it all.
Western Germany| Willingen – Sauerland
A total of 17 kilometers of groomed slopes, a variety of ski schools, night skiing, and free parking await you at the Willingen ski resort. Despite its lower altitude, Hesse’s largest ski resort is impressive. Snowmaking facilities ensure the slopes are always skiable, and the friendly operators make every run an enjoyable experience.
Just one kilometer from the ski lift, I felt particularly comfortable at the Best Western Plus Hotel Willingen. In addition to a diverse spa area, the hotel also has its own beer cellar, perfect for enjoying a drink with friends.
Southern Germany | Oberstdorf – Allgäu
In the southern Allgäu, you’re spoiled for choice. With seven ski resorts to choose from, my winter sports heart races, and I’m sure you’ll be just as thrilled. I was particularly impressed by Nebelhorn. As a sports enthusiast, Germany’s longest snow-covered valley run is a must, and the breathtaking alpine views are the cherry on top. I highly recommend it, especially with the new gondola lift that means no long waits.
The 500-square-meter wellness area, high-quality regional cuisine, and a cross-country ski trail right next to the hotel make the Best Western Plus Hotel Alpenhof the perfect base for a fantastic ski vacation in the southern Allgäu. You’ll enjoy stunning views and a central location!
Austria’s ski resorts
Austria offers a variety of beautiful ski resorts. However, my favorite ski region remains Zell am See. Despite the ever-growing tourism, the natural beauty there remains unmatched.
Zell am See | Schmittenhöhe and Kitzsteinhorn
Impressive heights or sun-drenched panoramic views: Zell am See offers both. With the Ski ALPIN CARD, you can easily switch between the high alpine delights of Kitzsteinhorn and the family-friendly Schmittenhöhe. Additionally, you have the opportunity to try out the deep powder freeride slopes in the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn.
A special highlight: The Elements Resort Zell am See, BW Signature Collection by Best Western. The nearest ski lift is less than a kilometer away, and the hotel offers an excellent breakfast, providing the perfect start to a day of winter sports.
