I chose to stay at the Best Western Plus Parkhotel Velbert for good reason. True to its name, the hotel is situated right by the park, providing an incredibly picturesque and verdant setting.
In addition to the quiet yet central location, I chose the hotel for its excellent restaurant. The restaurant “Zur Gießerei” boasts a sun-drenched terrace, inviting you to savor a culinary delight amidst a splendid view of the park. It serves up fresh, locally-sourced, and seasonal dishes. My personal highlight was the pumpkin-filled pasta pockets, and I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant even to non-hotel guests!
The city-center
A brisk 10-minute walk from the hotel will lead you into the heart of the city. The marketplace, situated in front of the historic church, and the shopping center are conveniently accessible via Poststraße. Along the intersecting Friedrichstraße, you’ll find charming cafes perfect for a well-deserved break after a leisurely shopping spree or a visit to the old church. Personally, I chose to unwind with a drink at Keks Bar & Lounge after my day of shopping.
Culture
The city also serves as an ideal launchpad for cultural enthusiasts. Be sure to include a brief sightseeing jaunt towards the Mariendom! En route, I took a detour to Hardenberg Castle, which proved to be a worthwhile visit despite ongoing construction work.
The St. Mary’s Cathedral
Next, I made my way to St. Mary’s Cathedral. This pilgrimage church is a true architectural highlight. I’ve yet to encounter another church quite as extraordinary! Constructed entirely from exposed concrete, it resembles a monumental rock formation. Despite its foundation being laid only in the 60s, Neviges has been a pilgrimage site since 1676, drawing devotees thanks to an apparition of the Virgin Mary. The interior of the church follows a brutalist aesthetic, diverging from the typical baroque opulence associated with Catholic churches. Love it or hate it, I personally found it to be a refreshingly distinct and incredibly impressive experience.
The historical town house Langenberg
While exploring the charming old town of Velbert-Langenberg, I stumbled upon the Bürgerhaus, a historic gem that could easily pass for a castle based on its visual appeal. For over a century, it has served as a hub for the community’s events and entertainment. Nowadays, the listed building primarily hosts musical and theatrical performances, yet as a tourist, you’re also invited to admire its grand halls, rooms, and towers.
The Villa Hügel
If you are willing to travel long distances, you shouldn’t miss Villa Hügel in Essen. In under half an hour by car, I arrived at the villa that resembled a castle. I was immediately struck by the grandeur of the building and the sprawling 28-hectare park surrounding it. This former Krupp estate is open to visitors today, offering not only architectural marvels but also a comprehensive Krupp exhibition. I was captivated by the exquisite grounds, including the reception area, and equally impressed by the interior layout and furnishings. It was truly a standout experience.
I’ve had a remarkable experience in Velbert and I wholeheartedly recommend this charming town in North Rhine-Westphalia to you. It has its very own charm, with its historic architecture and lush surroundings offering a wealth of attractions.
