That’s because there are many scenic hiking trails in the area, both rather shorter ones that are local, but also routes that connect several regions. Here are our recommendations:
Up the Fichtelberg Mountain
During an active vacation in Oberwiesenthal, a visit to the Fichtelberg is actually not to be missed. The Fichtelberg is with 1.214m height the highest mountain of Saxony. Your hiking tour up to the top of the mountain starts at the train station in Oberwiesenthal. From here you go to the edge of the forest and further up. Both on the summit of the Fichtelberg, as well as at the foot of the mountain, there are opportunities to stop and recharge your batteries.
The route is 8.8km long and not without its challenges! If you want to challenge yourself, this is the right place!
Eric-Frenzel-Tour
For those who prefer to take it slow at first, this route is just that. This hiking route is 3.46km and starts and ends at the valley station of the suspension railroad. More about this destination will follow later.
On this tour you have a fantastic panoramic view of the valley and also pass the ski jumps – Oberwiesenthal is also a fantastic winter sports destination!
Ridgeway Erzgebirge – Vogtland
The quality hiking trail is 285km long and leads from Altenberg to Blankenstein in Thuringia. Along the way, it winds its way over the highest peaks of the Ore Mountains and Vogtland.
The trail passes through the Erzgebirge/Vogtland Nature Park – which is home to some rare plants and animals.
There is also a lot to discover along the way, from inviting dams to show workshops where you can take a look over the craftsmen’s shoulders.
Depending on your fitness, the trail can also be explored in stages.
E-bike tour Oberwiesenthal
But hiking is not the end of the active vacation in this pretty village. You can also explore the area by bike! Starting at the parking lot, off you go! Get on the saddle – and thanks to e-bikes, the hilly landscape is no longer an obstacle!

Mountain Bike in Oberwiesenthal

Suspension railroad Fichtelberg
The suspension railroad is the oldest cable railroad in Germany. With it you can be transported comfortably to the top of the Fichtelberg.
The cable car takes you on a distance of 1,175m about 300m up in the air. Already during the ride you can enjoy the fantastic view!
